Year 2019

This project, located in a tropical region of Colombia near Bogotá, surrounded by mountains and an ideal climate for disconnecting, is commissioned by a religious community to accommodate elderly sisters. The aim of the project was to create a comfortable living space centered around a courtyard.

The project seeks to be a tranquil place where living and sharing everyday life in community are paramount. Its architecture is designed to harmoniously enjoy the passage of time. We dedicated time to understanding the convent’s daily life and the importance of a space to sit and converse while listening to nature. The architecture was conceived to contemplate the passage of the day through the shadows that move across the corridors, the textures, or the airy ramps that connect the different volumes without the need for stairs.

This project stems from the reinterpretation of a non-orthogonal cloister, a space that must adapt to the geometry and topography of the site. The main materiality revolves around brick and its textures, except for a single element in the center of the courtyard, which is the chapel. This sacred space is white, stands out in context, and is the main component around which the heart of the project is articulated.

Courtyard

The courtyard as a meeting place, the courtyard as a sacred place, and the courtyard as a connecting element.

This space, which is the heart of the project, surrounded by long corridors and ramps, is configured as an irregular yet harmonious place, resulting from the study of sunlight, winds, and the existing topography. The courtyard not only articulates and connects the spaces but also succeeds in blending architecture, worship, and landscape into a single space.
